May in the Junior Room

The Junior room were learning about different life cycles throughout April and May. The life cycles of a flowering plant, a butterfly, a frog and a hen were studied and sequenced. We were even lucky enough to see some tadpoles during our visit to Clara Bog!

Capacity was our main focus in maths. The children really enjoyed predicting and then estimating the amounts of water needed to fill different containers. We then began measuring with other materials such sand, marshmallows, blocks and discussed the results.

Our new topic for Aistear is Under the Sea. The genre of report writing is being explored and the children are busy planning, drafting and writing reports on their favourite sea creature. Under the Sea is already proving to be a favourite amongst the children as they race towards the sand box each day!

Our Active School week was a huge success. The children were very busy all week. An obstacle course was set up in the school which was great fun for both children and teachers. A wide range of playground games were explored, with the parachute definitely proving a favourite amongst all classes. We were lucky enough to meet Anna from Triathlon Ireland who taught us some running and cycling skills. The children practiced putting on and taking off their helmets and understood the importance of always wearing their helmet when cycling. A mini race was held and all the children were presented with lovely medals for taking part. To finish our Active week, we had athletics in Athlone and Ultimate Frisbee upon returning to school. The children put in excellent effort all week and what a great week we all had!
