January in the Junior Classroom

We started the New Year by talking about our New Year’s resolutions and created beautiful Firework Art using chalk and oil pastels. We had our final rugby training session with Micheál and started our Céilí dancing with Rita.

Our Aistear theme for the month was The Restaurant. Through our role play station we learned how to order food from a menu, read a menu, pay for our food and make a complaint. At our Literacy station we designed menus, created healthy dinner plates and did ‘Restaurant’ acrostic poems. At our Junk Art station we made burgers, plates of spaghetti Bolognese and pizzas. At our playdoh station we made various foods and plated them up! At our cookery station we made beef stew, brown and white soda bread, carrot soup and pizzas with yummy toppings. We read lots of books relating to eating!! – The tiger who came to tea, Chocolate Mousse for Greedy Goose and The Very Hungry caterpillar.

In art we printed fruits using our fingerprints. We created beautiful caterpillars after reading the book The very Hungry Caterpillar. We learned the days of the week. In Gaeilge we studied An Aimsir and learned the song Teidí Beag Álainn. We did a recount writing activity about the poem ‘There was an old lady who swallowed a fly’. We partook in the whole school science workshops and studied magnets and designing and making a variety of constructions.
